Storyline:
In 2008 while rehearsing for a charity event, actor Joaquin Phoenix, with Casey Affleck's camera watching, tells people he's quitting to pursue a career in rap music. Over the next year, we watch the actor write, rehearse, and perform to an audience. He importunes Sean Combs in hopes he'll produce the record. We see the actor in his home: he parties, smokes, bawls out his two-man entourage, talks philosophy with Affleck, and comments on celebrity.

It seems like Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix were trying to jump on the Borat and Brüno bandwagon with this Doku. Parts of it, especially Joaquin on stage reminds of Klaus Kinski freaking out back in the day. Since the end credits say that the movie has been written and produced by Phoenix and Afflek, this answers the question about being a hoax or a documentary. However Joaquins acting is superb and one gets access to see how he lives his live. There is also a special thanks to Gus Van Sant since there are some elements of the last days of Kurt Cobain in there as well. And since at some point where Joaquin can´t trust his assistant anymore (kind of the same person Brüno had as a helper only more dressed like Warhol) the Mafia theme rings during the film. But one wonders since he was such a great musician in walk the line why did he not do a better Job at Hip Hop, like Eminem?
